Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called on Egyptian authorities to take measures to ensure the safety of Russian tourists in the riot-hit Arab country.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called on Egyptian authorities to take measures to ensure the safety of Russian tourists in the riot-hit Arab country.

Lavrov sent a message to his Egyptian counterpart raising hope that the "leadership and society will show high national responsibility and do everything necessary to stabilize the situation."

The Russian Foreign Ministry earlier recommended tourists stay in their hotels and not leave guarded resort areas.

According to the Russian federal tourism agency, over 25,000 Russians are currently staying in Egypt, which is a popular tourist destination.

Anti-government protests continued for the fifth day on Saturday with crowds of tens of thousands demanding President Hosni Mubarak step down after three decades in power.

Some 1,000 people tried to storm the Interior Ministry's building on Saturday and police opened fire on the crowd, killing at least three protesters, Al Jazeera reported.

The TV channel said the death toll in Egypt has reached over 100, with most deaths reported in Cairo, Alexandria and Suez.

Violent clashes continued on Saturday despite the curfew ordered by President Mubarak who said the move was aimed at "maintaining security and protecting state and civil property."
