Russia is grateful to Egypt for providing security for Russian citizens during the recent tumult, a statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday after a phone conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Gheit said.

Nationwide heated upheavals demanding the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak broke out in late January in Egypt. On February, Mubarak stepped down. Over 5,000 people were injured in the clashes, 365 were killed.

"Lavrov thanked Egypt for the measures taken to shield tourists and other Russian citizens amid the upheaval," the statement said.

The both ministers expressed hopes that the flow of Russian tourists to Egypt will restore as soon as the situation affords it.
