A court in southern Russia has sanctioned the arrest of three Goths suspected of destroying about 40 tombs in the city of Rostov-on-Don in mid-April, the regional prosecutor's office press service said on Wednesday.

Members of the Goth subculture were having Night Walks in the Cemetery on the night to April 18 at the Severnoye Cemetery of Rostov-on-Don, one of the largest in Europe, the press service said.

Their walk resulted in about 40 gravestones being damaged, including ones from the Great Patriotic War (World War II) soldiers.

"The court has sanctioned the arrest of the suspects," the press service said.

Criminal proceedings have been launched into desecrating the dead and their burial sites, which entails an arrest of up to three months.

The Goth post-punk subculture, which began in England in the 1980s, is also associated with a certain type of music, mostly Goth rock, and dark colored clothing in a mixture of the Victorian and punk style with relevant makeup and hair. It also takes its roots from Gothic literature and horror movies.
