Economic deregulation will be a priority for Russia’s new president and government in the next five-six years, First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov said on Friday.

“Significantly reducing the government’s role [in the economy] is our principal goal for the next five to six years. It is a political goal for the future leadership, both the President and Prime Minister,” he said.Economic regulation has increased over the past few years, largely due to the 2008 crisis, Shuvalov said.

“Experts say the best-case scenario for the future political cycle is to reduce the state’s direct or indirect participation in the economy to 25 percent, 30 percent at the most,” he said.

Another serious problem for the new president and government will be to reduce the level of centralized economic administration, Shuvalov said.
