A woman in northern Russia was given a suspended sentence for killing her newborn and keeping its body for almost five years in a freezer.
A court in the city of Arkhangelsk established that in January 2007, Lyudmila Smirnova, 37, gave birth to a baby girl at home and then proceeded to smother it with a cloth.
Then she put the body into deepfreeze, keeping it there until December 29, 2011 when it was pulled out by her male companion, who thought it was meat.
The court took into account the fact that Smirnova admitted her guilt and that she has two other children, giving her a 22-month suspended sentence.
