Russia’s Investigative Committee said on Friday it is closing a criminal case into security violations that led to last year’s deadly blast at Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said on Friday it is closing a criminal case into security violations that led to last year’s deadly blast at Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport.

A criminal case of “non-compliance with transport safety rules” was launched after suicide bomber Magomed Yevloyev managed to carry explosives into Russia’s largest and busiest airport. The blast killed 37 people and left 173 injured.

"We had sufficient grounds for a decision to close the criminal case,” Investigation Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said.

The Domodedovo Airport welcomed the decision to close the case.

“We were sure that there were no elements of a crime in our staff’s actions,” an airport source told the Prime news agency.

The 2011 blast was not the first time Russia's largest airport has been targeted by terrorists. In August 2004, two planes which took off from the airport were blown up by female Chechen suicide bombers, killing a total of 90 people.
