MOSCOW, September 29 (RIA Novosti) – Three people were killed and one injured when a freight train and a car collided at a railroad crossing in southwest Siberia, the Emergencies Ministry’s regional center reported Saturday.

“A freight train and a VAZ-2115 car collided in the Tavrichesky District of the Omsk Region at 21:45 Moscow Time on September 28,” the center said in a statement.

The train was not derailed as a result of the accident, it said.

It was not immediately clear whether the car’s driver violated traffic regulations and why the accident occurred. An investigation is underway.

About 30,000 people die in traffic accidents in Russia annually. The accidents are attributed to a poor condition of roads and traffic violations, including drunk driving, running red lights and crossing into the oncoming lane.

Russian authorities have recently adopted laws to considerably toughen punishment for the most serious traffic violations.
