The shuttle had been due to blast off sometime in February, 2009.
"We now have done enough analysis of all the things that need to happen with the flight spare unit to know that we cannot be ready for a February launch," a NASA spokesman said.
He added that a decision on a new date for the launch, which has been subject to numerous delays, had not been made yet. However, it is expected the mission will not take place before April next year.
The Hubble experienced problems on September 27 when a technical problem occurred with an imaging unit that formats and stores data. The telescope started working again a month later after it was switched over to use a different formatter.
Astronauts on the Atlantis mission are due to replace the 18-year-old telescope's batteries and gyroscopes as part of final maintenance work which will allow the Hubble to continue operating until 2013.
Meanwhile, NASA said the Endeavour space shuttle mission to the International Space Station had been scheduled for take off on November 14.
