World scientists will be able to exchange opinions and establish cooperation at an international forum on the Arctic that opened in Moscow on Wednesday, the president of the Russian Geographical Society said.
The Russian Geographical Society is hosting "The Arctic: Territory of Dialogue", forum on September 22-23.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who heads the Russian Geographical Society Board of Trustees, is expected to attend.
"The International Arctic Forum 'The Arctic: Territory of Dialogue' has gathered acknowledged experts and outstanding scientists from all over the world, who will be able not only to exchange opinions and experience but also to establish comprehensive cooperation and collaboration on important issues related to the Arctic region," Sergei Shoigu, who is also the country's emergencies minister, said
Talks at the forum, which will also be attended by Iceland's President Olafur Grimsson and Prince Albert II of Monaco among others, will focus on the environmental issues in the Arctic, the rights of indigenous peoples in the region and the development of energy resources, Shoigu said.
International security and cooperation in the Arctic will also be a key focus.
