The court rejected an appeal to reverse the sentence and close the criminal case against the professor.
On June 17, a Novosibirsk district court found Novosyolov guilty on charges of abuse of authority and sentenced him to pay a $1,224 fine.
This it the third time the court has reviewed the grisly case. During previous trials, held in November 2003 and July 2004, the judges acquitted the defendant, but prosecutors managed to convince higher courts to overrule the decisions in both cases.
The investigation in the case began in 2001.
The recipient of the 51 bodies was German scientist Gunther von Hagens, the organizer of numerous anatomy exhibitions using human bodies.
Novosyolov denied the charges on all counts. His lawyer insisted Novosyolov had nothing to do with the smugglings.
Several relatives of the dead have been unsuccessfully trying to convince the authorities to bring the corpses back to Russia for proper burial.
