Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Wednesday that gay parades in Moscow are inadmissible, ruining hopes of the Russian gay community for holding sanctioned sexual minority events.
Sobyanin told the Ekho Moskvy radio station that he doubts any gay parades will be held in the Russian capital.
"Moscow does not need this at all and I am not a supporter [of gay parades]," the mayor said.
Requests to hold gay pride marches, described by ex-mayor Yury Luzhkov as "satanic," have been rejected by the Moscow authorities for years.
Last year, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Russia had violated the rights of gay activists by refusing to allow them to openly protest, and ordered the government to pay a fine and damages amounting to about $40,000.

- firstname.lastname@example.orgSpelling Corrections23:26, 16/02/2011There is a huge gay population in Moscow why the fuss?
I was very surprised when I read this article headline.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Wednesday that gay parades in Moscow are inadmissible.
I had no idea that Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin was gay phobic.
After having lived in San Francisco for 18 years I have to assure Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin that being gay is not contagious in any way shape or form.
Being gay is simply another gender identity of the human race and has been since the beginning of time.
In order for the generation population of Russia to accept all people no matter their race, religion, ethnicity or gender, being gay should also be in there.
By accepting everyone as being equal, everyone is treated equally. And this goes for gay people.
I am not gay myself and so I speak from a heterosexual point of view.
It is important for gay people to be recognized with respect and dignity and this includes gay parades. Why? Because it allows gay people to come together in solidarity to support each other.
Gay people are an important part of the community filling unique positions suited to their unique traits and personalities.
So I suggest that Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin have a more open mind and for the first time in Moscow history allow the beginning of gay parades.
And I promise you being gay is not something you catch from another gay person. It is simply another genetic gender of the human race. And it has been a genetic gender since the being of humanity.

- dwmusicdiversity in society is to be welcomed20:40, 27/05/2011You have made it so very clear with your abusive comment, how very much you do not want the likes of me living in Moscow, and you have done this without realising that the likes of me already live next door to you. I would not even be welcome as a tourist, even though I have always dreamed one day of visiting your beautiful country.
Unless we tell you, you will never know, because it is unfortunately possible for many gay people to pretend to be heterosexual so as to escape your hatred, your bigotry and your completely unjustifiable violence. We oftentimes do this by marrying opposite sex partners whom we do not love, bringing into the world sometimes children that as a result witness parents with no love for each other. Would you yourself willingly enter into such a marriage, arranged under open hostility?
Please will you take a few moments to reflect on where your attitudes emanate from, because they cause huge suffering to millions of LGBT people the world over. I think you will find you are reflecting the attitudes of those around you, without yourself having fully thought them through. What we homosexuals are, is normal human beings who have done nothing more than enjoy a positive interaction with another human being. But for this simple, and to us, joyous fact, we may be dismissed from employment, evicted from schools, churches and spat on by the public, who nevertheless accept our labours and our taxes that we willingly pay to support the very society that diminishes us. Love enriches us all, and hatred diminishes us by the same measure.
The growing outright rivalry between the United States and China gives Russia more foreign policy weight, enabling it to assume the role of a balancer. So far it has been doing so rather skillfully. Today it may participate in a joint naval exercise with China that Beijing positions as outwardly anti-American. But tomorrow it can team up with the naval forces of the Old World.
