Russia wins gold, silver at Beijing Olympics women's tennis final

Russia's Yelena Dementyeva has won the gold medal in the final of women's tennis event of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, after beating her compatriot Dinara Safina 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
BEIJING, August 17 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Yelena Dementyeva has won the gold medal in the final of women's tennis event of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, after beating her compatriot Dinara Safina 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Both Russians enjoyed straight sets victories in the semifinals as Dementyeva defeated her compatriot Vera Zvonaryova 6-3, 7-6 and Safina overcame China's Li Na 7-6, 7-5.

The bronze medal was earlier won by Russia's Zvonaryova who beat China's Na.

Russia is currently ranked 8th in the overall medal standings with 6 gold, 10 silver and 9 bronze medals, while China tops the standings boasting 29 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze medals.
