MOSCOW, August 23 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's team of synchronized swimmers won Olympic gold Saturday in the free routine event final, putting the country clear in third place in the medals table.

The Russian swimmers finished with a perfect 100.000 performance in the Team Free Routine on Saturday, scoring a cumulative total of 99.500 points.

Spain won the silver medal with a total score of 98.251, while hosts China earned the bronze medal with 97.334 points.

The medal is Russia's 19th gold at the Beijing Games, and takes the team clear of Britain, which has 18 golds, in the medals table.

However, Russia is long way off its total of 27 gold medals in Athens in 2004, and its worst performance as an independent country, when it won 26 golds in Atlanta in 1996.
