Russia slip two places in FIFA rankings

MOSCOW, September 3 (RIA Novosti) - Russia have dropped two places, from 10th to 12th, in the latest FIFA rankings released on Wednesday.

Russia's last game was a 1-1 draw at home to the Netherlands in a friendly on August 20.

Despite the drop in the rankings, Russian soccer has nevertheless enjoyed unparalleled success of late, with the national team reaching the semifinals of this summer's Euro 2008 - the first time the team had made it out of its group at a major tournament since the split up of the U.S.S.R.

The side lost 3-0 to eventual winners Spain in the last four.

Spain retain the top spot in the FIFA rankings.

Russia face Wales (ranked 53) at home on September 10 as they begin their qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup. The side's other opponents in Group Four are Germany (3), Finland (42), Azerbaijan (138) and Lichtenstein (130).
