Russians set new world record at European swimming championships

MOSCOW, December 11 (RIA Novosti) - Russian swimmers set a new world record in the 4 x 50 m medley on Thursday at the opening of the European Short-Course Championships in Rijeka, Croatia.

Stanislav Dontsa, Sergei Geibel, Nikolai Skvortsov and Sergei Fesikov won their qualifying heat in 1 minute 33.77 seconds.

The previous world record set by Germany in 2006 was broken earlier in the day by the Italian team in the first heat (1 minute 34.06 seconds) before the Russian team set the new mark.

The Russians and Italians will now compete in the final with the teams from Germany, Britain, France, Spain, Croatia and the Netherlands. The championship runs through Monday.
