The two Russian players knocked out at the beginning of the year's first Grand Slam tournament were Maria Kirilenko (seeded 27th), who lost in straight sets to unseeded Sara Earrani of Italy 0-6, 4-6, and Alla Kudryavtseva, who lost to her third-seeded compatriot Dinara Safina 3-6, 4-6.
Besides Safina, five more Russian women went through to the second round of the tournament: Vera Zvonareva (7); Nadezhda Petrova (10); Anna Chakvetadze (17); Alisa Kleibanova (29); and Yekaterina Makarova.
In the men's singles, Marat Safin (26), Russia's 2005 Australian Open champion, enjoyed a straight-sets victory over Spain's Ivan Navarro 6-3, 6-3, 6-4, while his compatriot Yevgeny Korolyov defeated another Spaniard, Carlos Moya, 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).
Five more Russian women - Yelena Dementieva (4), Svetlana Kuznetsova (8), Yelena Vesnina, Vera Dushevina and Yekaterina Bychkova - will compete for spots in the second round on Tuesday.
Russian men Igor Andreev (18), Dmitry Tursunov (29), Mikhail Yuzhny, Temuraz Gabashvili and Igor Kunitsyn will also play their opening ties on Day 2.
