MOSCOW, March 27 (RIA Novosti) - American Evan Lysacek won gold at the 2009 Figure Skating World Championship in Los Angeles, bringing the U.S. its first crown in the men's individual event for the past 13 years.

Performing to music "Rhapsody in Blue" in front of a home crowd at the Staples Center arena on Thursday night, Lysacek earned an overall 242.23 points leaving the Canada's 18-year-old rising star Patrick Chan behind with 237.58 points and a silver medal.

The 2007 World Champion from France, Brian Joubert, was leading after the short program on Wednesday, but failed to keep the lead and Thursday's performance brought him a total of 235.97 points and he trailed behind to take the bronze.

In the original dance earlier on Thursday Russian pair Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin scored 64.68 points behind the American duo of Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto with 65.16 points, but maintained their overall lead with 105.45 points against 104.81 points by the American duo.

Third place in the overall standings with 100.42 points is currently occupied by Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada, who unexpectedly finished fifth in Thursday's original dance.

The winners of the dance pairs will be decided in the free dance program scheduled for Friday.
