MOSCOW, December 21 (RIA Novosti) - German doctors had to perform an emergency surgery on Russian bobsledder Irina Skvortsova, who had been seriously injured during a training incident in Germany.

Skvortsova received multiple fractures including in her hips and back when the Russian women's team tipped over in the sled and stopped, after which the Russian men's team crashed into them from behind at full speed on a bobsleigh track in Konigssee.

"The operation was caused by an inflammation in pelvic bone junctures. Luckily, it was noticed and eliminated in time and did not penetrate deep into bones," said Lyudmila Kozlova, a spokesperson for the Russian Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation.

Skvortsova remains in induced coma and doctors are unlikely to wake her up until muscle tissue transplantation is performed on the athlete's right leg, which received the most serious injuries in the accident.

The transplantation was scheduled for Monday, but could be postponed due to Sunday's emergency surgery.

"Surgeons would carry an additional medical examination on Monday to decide whether to carry out this major operation or to postpone it," the spokeswoman said.
