Guus Hiddink's long-term future as trainer of the Russian national team remains unclear after a meeting with the new head of the country's governing body for football.

The Dutch trainer, who has been linked with a number of clubs since he failed to take Russia to the 2010 World Cup, met with new Russian Football Union president Sergei Fursenko in Moscow on Thursday afternoon to discuss his position as national team coach.

Hiddink's some $8 million a year contract runs out in July and ex-Zenit St. Petersburg president Fursenko is said to want to find a cheaper option, especially in light of Russia's catastrophic defeat to tiny Slovenia in a World Cup play-off last year.

"Gus has a contract until the summer" Fursenko was quoted by saying by the Sovetski Sport paper after the meeting. He refused to comment on whether the 63-year-old trainer would lead Russia's Euro 2012 campaign.

Hiddink was also guarded in his comments, saying only that he and Fursenko had "discussed some things."
