President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge and Russian deputy prime minister Dmitry Kozak opened on Tuesday a Sporting Glory museum in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi.
Rogge is currently on a visit to Sochi to monitor the city's preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
After cutting a red ribbon at the official opening ceremony, Rogge said it was a great honor to be present at the opening of the museum as remembering athletes and sporting achievements is very important.
The museum's main exhibits are the Olympic and Paralympic flags, that were brought to Sochi after this year's Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. The flags are exhibited in bullet- and fireproof cases.
Kozak, who cut the red ribbon with Rogge, said the museum lacked displays dedicated to Sochi athletes.
"I see no items belonging to [tennis players] Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Maria Sharapova. We should get in touch with them; I believe they would be glad to contribute to the museum," Kozak said.
The museum is located near the Sochi State University of Tourism. In the future it will function as a branch of the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.
