Russia struck it lucky Friday at the draw for the Euro 2012 finals, thrown into Group A with the lower-ranked teams Czech Republic, co-host Poland and surprise 2004 champions Greece.

The Russians avoided what will inevitably be labeled the group of death, Group B, which brings together the Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal and Germany.

The draw in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev was also relatively kind to England, who play in Group D with co-host Ukraine, France and Sweden.

Reigning champions Spain kick off their title defense against Italy, Ireland and Croatia in Group C.

Russia midfielder Roman Shishkin told RIA Novosti that the draw eases the pressure on Dick Advocaat’s side.

“Our chances of getting out of the group are greater thanks to the draw,” he said. “But the games won’t be easy.”

Everton winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov warned against complacency.

“In no way can we underestimate these teams,” he said. “We have to prepare ourselves as seriously as we can.”

Russia were denied any group games in the Russian-speaking east of Ukraine, and will have to travel to Poland from their Kiev base for matches in Warsaw and Wroclaw.

Russian officials had hoped the country would play several games in Ukraine to take advantage of the support, which would have turned their matches into veritable home games.

Russia have clashed with Greece and the Czech Republic at the Euros before.

Greece’s only defeat on their unlikely charge to the 2004 title in Portugal was against Russia, who triumphed 2-1 on goals from Dmitry Kirichenko and Dmitry Bulykin.

Konstantin Zyryanov scored goal in a 1-0 win over Greece in 2008, when Russia reached the semifinals under previous coach Guus Hiddink.

Russia’s only point at Euro ‘96 in England was a 3-3 draw against the Czechs, who had Vladimir Smicer to thank for an 88th-minute equalizer.

The tournament kicks off June 8 in Warsaw with Poland against Greece.

Russia begin their campaign against Czech Republic later on the same day in Wroclaw; then on June 12 face the test of co-hosts Poland in their capital, Warsaw; and remain there for their last game against Greece on June 16.
