Players from Russian Premier League side FC Krasnodar have donated almost $11,000 to help the victims of the flood in the local region, the club said Sunday.

Flash floods devastated more than 7,000 homes in and around the town of Krymsk earlier this month, killing 171 and leaving leaving thousands homeless and in need of emergency supplies.

Various sporting and entertainment events were canceled and a national day of mourning declared.

"The team has collected a total of 350,000 rubles ($10,954) ," Krasnodar said in a website statement.

"Of these, 300,000 ($9,389) were given directly to representatives of nine families most affected by the Krymsk tragedy."

"The family of a Krasnodar boy who recently had a brain tumor removed by surgery, recieved another 50,000 ($1,564 dollars). These funds will go to pay for the child's recovery."

Krasnodar start their Premier League campaign against Rubin Kazan on Monday.
