Maria Sharapova thrashed Israel’s Shahar Peer in the first round of the Olympic tournament on Sunday.

In just over an hour the 25-year-old Russian, seeded third, sealed a 6-2, 6-0 win.

Peer, ranked 49 in the world, broke her opponent’s serve in the first game of the match, but was demolished in the rest of the match as Sharapova racked up 22 winners to Peer’s two.

Sharapova, who carried the Russian flag at Friday’s opening ceremony, will play either Britain’s Laura Robson or Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic in the next round.
