MOSCOW, November 14 (R-Sport) - Former Russia coach Valery Gazzaev is returning to club management after a stint as president of Alania Vladikavkaz.

Gazzaev, 58, will combine his role as president with that of head coach after the resignation of his son, Vladimir, from that post.

"I would first of all like to thank my son Vladimir for the work he's done," Gazzaev senior said in a website statement.

"Last year he took the team from zero to promotion to the Russian Premier League, and proved that he's worthy of being Alania's head coach."

Vladimir Gazzaev handed in his notice a week ago in the wake of a miserable run of form that saw the Caucasus team languish second from bottom in the Russian Premier League.

He led Alania to promotion last season after moving from assistant to head coach.

Valery Gazzaev is one of Russian football's most recognizable faces, having coached Moscow teams Dynamo and CSKA before taking over from Oleg Romantsev as national team coach after the 2002 World Cup.

Before that, he was club coach at Alania from 1994 to 1999, and won the Russian championship with the side in 1995, earning Champions League qualification.

They lost to Glasgow Rangers 10-3 on aggregate in the qualification rounds.
