An old Italian lady has bequeathed all her property estimated at about 2 million euros ($2.5 million) to her beloved dog, the local media reported on Sunday.

The decision by the 84-year-old woman living in the town of Caserta together with her daughter and several grandchildren was announced by her lawyer Lucia Esposito on Saturday.

Under the old lady’s will, her mongrel dog called Kikko will inherit two apartments, several land estates and also bank accounts. The old woman has made this decision soon after her husband’s death, according to her lawyer.

The old lady has signed the will with her own hand, Esposito said, adding her client had also consulted with other lawyers who had had the practice of attesting documents like this.

Under Italian law, bequeathing any property to domestic animals has no legal force. Therefore, persons willing to bequeath their property to their beloved cats or dogs must appoint an executor of their will, either a private individual or a public organization. The executor will be obliged to ensure a worthy life-long existence of a domestic animal after receiving the right of access to all bequeathed valuables.

The 84-year-old woman has appointed her lawyer Esposito as the executor of her will.
