MOSCOW, August 6 (RIA Novosti) - Global security is more important than national ambitions, the deputy director of the Far East Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences said.
"Today we mark the tragic anniversary of the atomic bombings of Japan," professor Vasily Mikheyev said. "The events in Hiroshima proved the destructive power of nuclear weapons. During the cold war, Russia and the U.S.A. realized the necessity of measures against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Today the world is facing the threat of terrorism and this problem has become increasingly important."
"This is directly linked with the current talks on the North Korean nuclear problem in Beijing," he said adding that the talks could come to a deadlock.
"North Korea has succeeded in winning diplomatic matches with the other five parties, as the United States, China, Russia, South Korea and Japan lack a common negotiation policy," the expert said.
"Pyongyang has already won the fourth round by getting 500,000 tons of rice and 350 tons of mineral fertilizers for the mere participation in these talks," he added.
"North Korea has switched the talks from the closing of the Pyongyang nuclear program to the nuclear-free status of the Korean peninsula," Mikheyev said calling it the first political victory of the DPRK.
"Today the talks have virtually come to a Pyongyang-Washington dialogue," he said adding it was the second victory of North Korea.
"The real danger is not the North Korean nuclear program (nobody knows what stage it has entered) but the bluff and speculations on the threats to use nuclear weapons."
The six-nation talks on the North Korean nuclear problem resumed on July 26. On February 12, 2005, the DPRK official announced that it had nuclear weapons. However, there are no proofs of this assertion.
