IAEA calls emergency meeting on Iran

VIENNA, August 9 (RIA Novosti, Borislav Pechnikov) - The 35-member board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) opens discussions on Iranian nuclear programs here Tuesday, a spokesman for the agency said.

Melissa Fleming, IAEA's official spokesperson, said the meeting would focus on how Iran was meeting its obligations under nuclear security regulations and the UN Security Council's resolutions amid new developments in Iran.

Since Iran has resumed uranium ore processing at its Isfahan Nuclear Technology Center, the board of governors has to agree on a final formula for a resolution on Iran's "nuclear files."

The Iranian decision to launch the first stage of a uranium enrichment program has endangered efforts of the European Troika, also known as the Big Three, (Britain, France, and Germany), to reach a compromise in the longstanding deadlocked negotiations between the EU and Iran, an IAEA source said.

The meeting might result in a tough decision to transfer Iran's "nuclear files" to the UN Security Council with the possibility of invoking sanctions against the country, the source said.

Other sources in the IAEA do not believe that the board-member states can persuade Russia, China and developing countries to accept a tough resolution on Iran.

Experts think IAEA will confine itself to another "strong warning," as its Director General Mohamed ElBaradei "presumably does not intend to dramatize the situation and bring it up to the UN Security Council," the source said.

The meeting will start at 2p.m. GMT.

Official Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said Monday that Iran is not fearful over the emergency meeting on its "nuclear files" and that there are no legal reasons for calling the meeting.
