HELSINKI, October 7 (RIA Novosti) - The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Friday that the International Atomic Energy Agency and its Director General Mohamed ElBaradei had been jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2005.

The prize will be shared equally between the UN's nuclear watchdog, which is based in Vienna, and its Egyptian head, the committee said.

The prize was awarded "for their efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is used in the safest possible way," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.
