TEL AVIV, October 20 (RIA Novosti) - The Israeli military command is planning to shut off the elevators in its General Staff buildings to improve the physical condition of officers in administrative posts, an Israeli army spokesman said Thursday.
"During the day, the elevators will be switched off for a certain time, so all General Staff officers will have to walk up and down the stairs," he said, noting that the mandatory exercise was a part of Health Week, scheduled for late October through early November.
The officers will also be given lectures on nutrition and [leading] a healthy lifestyle and play sports.
"God gave us feet, so let's use them," an Israeli newspaper quoted Lt. Col. Avi Benit, the move's initiator, as saying.
"Sometimes I see things that drive me crazy. Officers take an elevator to get to an underground garage, where a driver is waiting for them to take them to the next building," he said.
