Russia, Israel discuss Iran and Middle East

TEL AVIV, November 14 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and Israel are united in the belief that Iran should not have nuclear weapons, but do have some "tactical differences" over ways to solve the Iranian nuclear problem, Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said Monday following high-level talks in Jerusalem.

Secretary of the Russian Security Council Igor Ivanov and Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom discussed Iran on Sunday. Israel insists that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should file Iran's "nuclear file" to the UN Security Council after the board of governors meet on November 24, but Russia, which is building a nuclear reactor in Iran, said the dialogue should be continued within the IAEA.

Iran has consistently said it wants to develop nuclear power for peaceful purposes, but some countries, led by the United States, doubt the veracity of such statements, particularly in the light of recent comments made by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that Israel should be "wiped off the map."

Ivanov and Silvan also discussed Syria and Lebanon. Both Russia and Israel supported a UN resolution on Syria's withdrawal from Lebanon, along with disarming of radical Islamic groups, including Palestinian groups, and Lebanon-based Hezbollah.
