Five out of seven people infected with bird flu in Azerbaijan have died, a press release from the World Health Organization said Thursday.

BAKU, March 23 (RIA Novosti, Gerai Dadashev) - Five out of seven people infected with bird flu in Azerbaijan have died, a press release from the World Health Organization said Thursday.

Tests conducted by WHO experts showed that all seven people were infected by H5N1 virus strain after contact with wild birds. A 10-year-old boy has recovered and been discharged from the hospital, while a 15-year-old girl is still being treated.

Earlier this month, Azerbaijan confirmed the deaths of three people, who like the recent victims came from two villages in the east of the country.

A WHO official earlier said a bird flu pandemic could result in 2-7 million human deaths worldwide.
