BISHKEK, May 10 (RIA Novosti, Yuliya Orlova) - Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev reshuffled the government Wednesday following a series of resignations in a political crisis that has engulfed the former Soviet republic, a governmental source said.

The move came amid increasing public discontent over the slow pace of change since the "tulip revolution" of spring 2005 brought Bakiyev to power in Kyrgyzstan, one of the poorest countries in Central Asia.

Ishengul Boldzhurova, rector of the National University and a high-profile figure in the "tulip revolution", was appointed acting deputy prime minister, a post she held until last fall, when she failed to garner the votes needed by parliament to confirm her in the office permanently.

Azim Isabekov, formerly first deputy head of the presidential administration, replaced Abdimalik Anarbayev as minister for agriculture, water and processing industries.

Businessman Daniyar Usenov took over as acting first deputy prime minister from Medetbek Kerimkulov, who is now minister for trade, industry and tourism.

Adakhan Madurmarov, a deputy prime minister, moves to become acting secretary of state. Busurmankul Tabaldiyev, currently the head of presidential administration's defense and security department and a former prosecutor general, has been appointed chairman of the influential National Security Service, to replace Tashtemir Aytbayev, who resigned earlier Wednesday.

Thirteen Cabinet members including the deputy prime minister, foreign and interior ministers handed in their resignations at the start of May after parliament criticized their work in the year following the "tulip revolution", but Bakiyev refused to accept the resignations.

A 15,000-strong opposition rally in Bishkek on April 29 demanded the dismissal of several senior state officials, as well as constitutional reform and efforts to fight widespread corruption.
