On May 12, a group of six gunmen shot its way through the Tajik-Kyrgyz border killing a number of civilians before being surrounded in an operation that left at least six Kyrgyz soldiers dead and nine wounded.
Although four of the gunmen were killed and two detained, Buzurmankul Tabaldiyev, head of the National Security Service, told President Kurmanbek Bakiyev "the protection of southern Kyrgyz borders should be reinforced with weapons and military hardware."
Tabaldiyev said the gunmen "had been planning a series of terrorist attacks in Kyrgyzstan."
He also said components of explosive devices, 17 Kalashnikov assault rifles, a sniper rifle and ammunition had been found on the attackers.
The Kyrgyz parliament established a special commission Monday to investigate the incident in the troubled republic. Parliamentarians said the country's top brass should bear responsibility for the considerable loss of life.
