"We had agreed to impose a two-year moratorium [on enrichment], but it was a bitter experience for the Iranian people," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said. "The Iranian people will not fall into the same trap again."

TEHRAN, May 17 (RIA Novosti) - Iran's president said Wednesday that the Islamic Republic would not suspend its uranium enrichment program.

"We had agreed to impose a two-year moratorium [on enrichment], but it was a bitter experience for the Iranian people," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said. "The Iranian people will not fall into the same trap again."

The EU3 negotiators - Britain, France and Germany - together with EU foreign policy supremo Javier Solana have offered Iran a European light-water nuclear reactor in exchange for a promise to stop its uranium enrichment program.

"Do you think that you are dealing with a four-year child to whom you may give walnuts and chocolate and receive gold in return?" Ahmadinejad said in the Iranian province of Markazi about the EU proposal. "We do not need your proposals."

The president said Iran had only been trying to exercise its rights as defined by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

"The right to use peaceful nuclear technologies is the right of all countries as envisaged in the NPT," he said.
