Uzbekistan's Justice Ministry said Monday it had asked Tashkent city court to shut down the office of an American non-governmental organization in the country.

TASHKENT, May 29 (RIA Novosti, Abu-Ali Niyazmatov) - Uzbekistan's Justice Ministry said Monday it had asked Tashkent city court to shut down the office of an American non-governmental organization in the country.

The ministry said the activities of American Councils for International Education were out of line with the organization's declared tasks, and added that the mission had violated Uzbek law.

In 2005, the ministry said, the mission had been warned twice and urged to change its activities to bring them in line with the law. The head of an Accels program was previously expelled from the country for alleged violations.

American Councils is an NGO based in Washington that runs mainly educational programs across the United States and Canada, as well as Southeastern Europe, Eurasia, and South Asia.
