Iran says Russia wants nuclear issue to remain with IAEA
Topic: Iran joins nuclear club
TEHRAN, May 30 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and Iran want Tehran's controversial nuclear programs to remain within the remit of the International Atomic Energy Agency, a spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry said Tuesday.
Hamid Reza Asefi said Iran discussed a broad range of issues during a visit made to Iran by Igor Ivanov, the secretary of Russia's Security Council and a former foreign minister.
Asefi rejected media reports that Iran might stop its uranium enrichment program.
"Iran will accept nothing that goes beyond the framework of its obligations within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, particularly the demand to suspend nuclear research," Asefi said.
Ministers from the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany will meet in Vienna June 1 to continue efforts to break the impasse over Iran's nuclear program.
