TASHKENT, May 31 (RIA Novosti) - Uzbekistan's Justice Ministry said Wednesday that it had asked a court in the capital to close the mission of an international non-governmental organization.
Global Involvement through Education now faces the same fate as the American Bar Association / Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative, which a Tashkent court ruled in April should be closed after 11 years in the country.
"The request has been filed because the activity of the Global Involvement through Education mission does not correspond to objectives declared in its charter," a ministry spokesperson said.
The source said inspectors had also registered other violations of Uzbek laws by the NGO.
It was earlier reported that some of the NGO's staff had been fined for attempting to convert students from Islam and Orthodox Christianity to Protestantism under the cover of teaching them English.
