Ukraine's Naftogaz pumping gas to storage ahead of time

KIEV, June 22 (RIA Novosti, Olga Bernatskaya) - Ukraine is pumping natural gas to its underground storage facilities ahead of schedule in June, the country's oil and gas company Naftogaz said Thursday.

A price spat with Russia's Gazprom led to the energy giant cutting off supplies to Ukraine in early January, which led European-bound supplies of Russian natural gas in transit via the ex-communist country allegedly being siphoned off. Shortfalls in Europe were registered prompting fears that a similar situation could develop again this year.

But Naftogaz sought to allay concerns by saying it had achieved about quarter of its storage target. "As of June 22, 2006, a total of 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas has been pumped into Ukraine's underground gas depots," it said. "The gas volumes pumped in this June have exceeded the indicators planned for this period by 127 million cu m."

The company said planned figures of gas volumes inside depots to be used in fall and winter would be reached in full by October 15 and it planned to have 23.3 billion cu m of gas in its depots.

Romano Prodi, a former European Commissioner and current prime minister of Italy, one of the countries affected in January, said Tuesday that his country would do everything possible to help Ukraine set up a natural-gas reserve.
