Kyrgyz parliament calls for re-nationalization of Akayev assets

BISHKEK, June 29 (RIA Novosti) - Kyrgyzstan's parliament Thursday advised the government to repossess illegally privatized companies controlled by the family of ex-President Askar Akayev and members of his inner circle.

Akayev was toppled in popular uprisings in March 2005 known as the "tulip revolution" and fled the country, after which the Prosecutor General's Office opened a series of criminal cases on charges of illegal privatization of several large industrial enterprises. But the cases were put on hold following the dismissal of Prosecutor General Azimbek Beknazarov.

In a resolution, the deputies recommended that the Prosecutor General's Office complete the investigation as soon as possible.

The parliament based its recommendation on findings presented by a special commission to fight corruption, headed by Beknazarov.
