Cyprus ready to receive Russian evacuees from Lebanon - embassy

ATHENS, July 19 (RIA Novosti) - Cyprus is ready to receive Russian citizens evacuated from Lebanon, the Russian Embassy in Nicosia said Wednesday.

About 200 people have been killed in Lebanon in Israeli air strikes and more than 20 Israelis have been killed in attacks mounted by militant group Hizbollah.

"All the necessary conditions have been created to receive the Russian citizens," counselor Vladimir Maitsrenko said. "We are in constant contacts with the Cypriot Foreign Ministry and other departments and have been met with a generous attitude, complete understanding and readiness to help."

He also said the authorities of Cyprus were ready to simplify visa formalities for the evacuees.

About 1,000 Russians are expected to be evacuated from Lebanon Wednesday as the fighting between Israel and Hizbollah enters its second week. The first group of 250 evacuees arrived in neighboring Syria Tuesday night.
