CAPE TOWN, September 6 (RIA Novosti) - A project to build an aluminum plant in South Africa will depend on the outcome of talks with Canada's Alcan company, which runs the project, and power energy supply opportunities, the head of Russian asset manager Renova Capital said Wednesday.

A series of cooperation deals were signed and proposals, including assistance in the construction of an aluminum plant, were made during the visit of a President Putin-led Russian delegation to South Africa, which started Tuesday.

"Our company SUAL is also considering the possibility [to participate in the project]," said Viktor Vekselberg, who is also a shareholder of SUAL, one of the world's top 10 aluminum producers.

Construction of the plant with an annual capacity of 660,000 metric tons in Port Elizabeth, in the southeast of the country, was suspended after Alcan, the worlds' second-largest aluminum producer, took over the French company Pechiney, which had been running the $2.5 billion project, in 2003.
