TBILISI, October 9 (RIA Novosti) - A shootout broke out early Monday in South Ossetia, an assistant commander of the Joint Peacekeeping Force in the area said.

"There was sporadic fire from midnight until 12:15 a.m. Moscow time (8:00-8:15 p.m. GMT) between the south of Tskhinvali and the Georgian town of Ergneti," Vladimir Ivanov said. "It was a low-intensity firefight with small arms and light weapons that lasted for 15 minutes. There are no casualties."

South Ossetia declared its independence from Georgia following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Georgian leadership is seeking to bring the self-proclaimed republic back under its control.
