"If the EU thinks it can take radical steps with regard to Iran's nuclear program and to simultaneously continue talks with us, they must understand that Iranians are not that simple and understand everything perfectly well," Larijani said.
TEHRAN, October 23 (RIA Novosti) - Talks between Iran and the European Union on the country's nuclear problem should be fruitful, the secretary of Iran's Security Council said Monday.

"We remain committed to agreements reached during talks with [EU High Representative] Javier Solana," Ali Larijani said. "We do not think we can hold fruitless negotiations."

The UN adopted a resolution on Iran July 31 demanding that the country suspend uranium enrichment by August 31 or face sanctions. But Tehran, which denies that its nuclear project is aimed at producing weapons, refuses to comply.

The United States and Britain renewed calls for sanctions against a defiant Iran when negotiations between the country's key nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana failed to produce any breakthrough.

"If the EU thinks it can take radical steps with regard to Iran's nuclear program and to simultaneously continue talks with us, they must understand that Iranians are not that simple and understand everything perfectly well," Larijani said.

He said one of the possible ways to alleviate the international community's concerns about his country's nuclear program would be to create an international consortium to enrich uranium, which could involve other countries.

Russia and China, both of which have a veto on the UN Security Council as well as business interests in Iran, have consistently opposed any punitive measures against Tehran.
