MOSCOW, October 24 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and NATO practiced Tuesday a simulated scenario to repel a potential ballistic missile attack.

The simulation is part of a weeklong joint command-and-staff exercise that began October 16 in Moscow, a senior defense ministry official said.

It is the third joint exercise under the experimental concept of a joint theater missile defense developed by a special working group of the NATO-Russia Council. The previous exercises took place in the U.S. in 2004 and the Netherlands in 2005.

"We are satisfied with the results of the exercise, because during three years of joint training, our servicemen have worked out the patterns of cooperation necessary to accomplish real tasks if they are set to us in the future," said Yevgeny Buzhinsky, deputy head of the Defense Ministry's international military cooperation department.

The current joint exercise, which involves 60 officers from 11 NATO countries, and about 80 officers from Russia, is meant to lay the groundwork for a Russian-NATO field missile defense exercise scheduled for the fall of 2007.
