Ukraine ready to send peacekeepers to Lebanon-FM Tarasyuk

KIEV, October 24 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine has offered to send a military contingent to take part in the UN peacekeeping operation in Lebanon, the country's foreign minister said Tuesday.

Israeli military operations against the Lebanon-based radical group Hizbollah in late July-early August claimed the lives of over 1,000 Lebanese civilians, forced nearly a quarter of the country's population to flee, and demolished some 100 bridges and 60 highways. The total damage inflicted is estimated in the billions of dollars. About 160 Israelis also died.

"The offer [concerning the use of a Ukrainian contingent] is under review," Borys Tarasyuk said, adding there has been no response yet.

He said that because the international peacekeeping force in Lebanon has already been formed, Ukraine's application will probably be considered early next year.

He said at the moment, 564 Ukrainian military servicemen and police are involved in eight international peacekeeping operations under UN auspices.

The UN is presiding over humanitarian efforts and is to deploy 15,000 peacekeepers in southern Lebanon to ensure a ceasefire after month-long fighting between Hizbollah and Israel.
