KIEV, November 23 (RIA Novosti) - A court in Kiev issued a warrant Thursday for the arrest of a Russian businessman on extortion charges, a defense lawyer said.
The businessman, Maksim Kurochkin, was detained Monday at the Borispol international airport in Kiev. He will now be under arrest for two months.
"The court has chosen this measure to prevent Kurochkin from fleeing prosecution," Vasiliy Didenko said, adding he would appeal the ruling.
Kurochkin has been on the wanted list since Ukrainian law enforcement officers opened a criminal case against him in the spring of 2005.
If convicted, he could be sentenced to a prison term of three to seven years.
