Georgia intends to resolve conflicts with its breakaway provinces after its accession to NATO, the parliamentary speaker of the South Caucasus country said Tuesday.
RIGA, November 28 (RIA Novosti) - Georgia intends to resolve conflicts with its breakaway provinces after its accession to NATO, the parliamentary speaker of the South Caucasus country said Tuesday.

Tbilisi seeks to bring the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which proclaimed their independence from Georgia after the collapse of the Soviet Union, back under its control.

Nino Burdzhanadze, speaking before the start of the Western security alliance's summit in Riga, said: "It would be easier if Georgia is first admitted to NATO and then begins talks on South Ossetia and Abkhazia, with the involvement of NATO."

"I also refute Russia's accusations that Georgia seeks a military resolution of these conflicts," she said.

Georgia accuses Russia of supporting separatist forces in the breakaway provinces, while the Russian Foreign Ministry says Georgia's provocative actions is the cause of the current crisis in bilateral relations with Tbilisi.

The speaker also said Georgia was already involved in a number of NATO operations, and intended to continue developing democracy.
