"Many Americans asked me to tell them about the Iran's policy," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said. "I am going to write an address to Americans."
TEHRAN, November 29 (RIA Novosti) - The president of Iran has written an address to the American people, an Iranian government paper said Wednesday.

It said a five-page letter from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was sent to the UN headquarters in New York through diplomatic channels and will be released later today in the United Nations.

Earlier this month Ahmadinejad told a news conference he was planning to send a message to the American nation.

"Many Americans asked me to tell them about the Iran's policy," he said. "I am going to write an address to Americans."

The U.S. has pressed for sanctions against Iran, which some countries suspect of pursuing a weapons program under the cover of peaceful nuclear research, despite persistent denials from Tehran, which says it needs nuclear energy for electricity.

The Iranian president wrote a letter to U.S. President George W. Bush in May, which Washington criticized for not addressing the key issue of Iran's controversial nuclear program.

Diplomatic relations between Iran and the United States were ruptured in 1979 following a hostage taking crisis, in which militants seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and kept over 50 people hostage for more than 440 days.
