BISHKEK, January 9 (RIA Novosti) - An earthquake measuring six on the Richter scale shook southwestern Kyrgyzstan early Tuesday, causing slight damage but injuring no one, a spokesman for the Kyrgyz government said.

"We can now say with certainty that there are no victims," the source said.

According to preliminary reports, the overnight tremor, with its epicenter in the Batken Province near Kyrgyzstan's border with Tajikistan, partially destroyed several homes and administrative buildings in the village of Katran, 90 kilometers (56 miles) from the provincial capital, as well as in nearby settlements.

An ad hoc commission, led by the region's governor, is currently at the site trying to measure the scale of the destruction, the government spokesman said. It will make its first findings public later in the day, he said.
