Ukraine will strive to integrate into the European Union and NATO as soon as possible, the country's president said Saturday.
MUNICH, February 10 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine will strive to integrate into the European Union and NATO as soon as possible, the country's president said Saturday.

"We will work consistently to integrate into European institutions," Viktor Yushchenko said on the sidelines of an international security conference in Munich, adding that not everything depends on Ukraine.

Asked how soon Ukraine could become a member of NATO and the EU, he said that "this does not only depend on us."

He also said Ukraine's integration into the EU is proceeding essentially along the same lines as Russia's, adding that Russia is creating four common spaces with the EU.

"I wish to God Ukraine would do the same," he said.

Yushchenko, who swept into power on the back of the 2004 "orange" revolution, is determined to take Ukraine into NATO and the European Union, but his efforts to forge closer ties with the West have been staunchly opposed by pro-Russian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych.
